So Long, Sushiland!

Tomorrow will be my last official day at Sushi Land! This place.. has been a pain in the butt at times, but overall a pretty memorable experience. So... let's look back on the memories :)

Because of you Sushiland.....

- I learned responsibilities, such as learning to manage my money, being to places on time, etc. while also highlighting my irresponsibities (ok, it says "irresponsibilities" isn't a word, but I'm going to say it is) as well
- Oh man, the Sushi Land drama/gossip vine... Oh, the crazy drama that happened and was said.. the stories shared between co-workers.. somehow it was always Julie who knew everything... proposals... fake hospital stories... HAHA those stories will be treasured.
- You realize... you never really get sick of sushi.
- Whenever I meet a nice waiter/waitress now.. I just think, are they actually this nice of a person? or are they making small chat with me because they want me to like them so I give a better tip.. because yup, a lot of times I hoped they would leave a nice tip b/c I was being extra friendly.. (I once told a person he looked like Patrick Dempsey.. which he actually did.. but he gave me a tip on his take out order, and bam!, it makes the day that much better!)
- I learned to deal with so many annoying and rude customers. Many eyes... have been rolled in the Sushi land establishment..
- I will not miss the water and green tea orders.. Getting water and green tea was the worst drink order.. HAHA we're such brats.
- But for every annoying and rude customer, there are twenty awesome customers. My favorite customers:
  • guy who has a ponytail that always orders chicken teriyaki and cranberry juice and reads his book at the bar.
  • The mom with her two sons who always eat 6 california rolls each.
  • Cute babies that come in and eat edamame and rice and soy sauce and literally spill edamame beans EVERYWHERE.... you're lucky you're cute, little babies.
  • Friends who come to visit you :) and you feel bad you can only get them a free edamame..
  • Every customer who always orders the same exact thing every time.. and I can just say what they want before they even order, and it makes them happy because they feel like a regular.
  • Two diva ladies... who eat double salads and one always comes in with her own Dunkin Donuts ice tea... I love very nice people.
  • Tug, the best take out order tipper.
- I probably will think twice about eating at any restaurant because of sanitary reasons... but whatever, I'll still eat out! HAHA
- I met some pretty great people. I'll always remember meeting Julie & Angel on my first day of work ever.. and they let me take an order even though I wasn't allowed to.
- The danger hazard of working there on a rainy night.. It's unbelievable that I did not slip and fall once.
- The smell of sushi is so potent there.. that it's impossible to go somewhere afterwards without someone saying you smell like sushi or fried food.
- I learned how to suck it up and just keep working because honestly, there's no point in complaining that much.. doesn't make your work shift any better.. so might as well give it your best try.
- Bryn Mawr students.. you seriously stink. You guys are the worst tippers in the history of tippers.... HAHAHA and I don't feel bad because fellow Bryn Mawr waitresses will complain about it as well. We have gotten...... 0% tip... a 23 cent tip... several more checks of under $2 tip.. HAHA
- Nova students.. HAHA I don't know, now that I'm leaving... I will miss the sorority girls that come in with their bigs and littles and their boxed wine.. HAHA
- Andrew from The Grog who always hung out with me in the back parking lot during our breaks and he'd tell me funny stories and about married life.
- I learned... most bosses are probably not like Jae. He is the silliest and most lenient boss.. who sings way too much. Maybe Chris is a more realistic boss type figure... HAHA.
- I've lost a good number of a good sneakers from the disgusting filth that just starts conglomerating on the bottom of your shoes.
- I've changed my favorite roll from....... Summer Lover to Hurricane (for awhile) to the Crunch roll (but let's be real everyone knows the whe dub bop is the best).
-I love the way people mispronounce sake make, whe dup bop, gyoza (guy-oza), etc.
- Oh and of course.. me & Julie are going to take over and be co-owners someday!

As I move on with my life though... these past 2 years have been fun, crazy, stressful and an awesome experience. So, what more can you ask for? It was a pretty great first job.

.. and you say, "Allentown?!"

so, this weekend, we took a trip over to allentown, yes allentown, to visit Timmy :) and allentown, you did not let us down.. maybe it was just the company along with the beautiful weather and quirky things to do there like go buy a dollar of fish food in a bag and feed thousands of trout at a fish hatchery or eat california inspired burritos or go to a shark themed party LOL. We also, stopped by a rose garden, grabbed sushi, went bowling (more like the girls won in bowling), all took an hour long mid day nap, etc. Anyway, I won't lie, it's the most fun weekend I've had in awhile.. and I mean we saw each other, at the minimum, every weekend of our senior years... so maybe it was easy to take that time together for granted cause you knew that person was going to be there the next day.. and for the rest of the year. But this trip took planning, one rescheduling, one Bieber bus ride from Long Island, an hour long car ride from PA, a 2 hour long car ride from Jersey, a person unable to make it last minute, etc. Maybe.... I'm just a boring post college grandma who finds this stuff exciting now, who knows... but I had a great time and it made me realize how difficult it is to meet up after college when everyone's got their own jobs/schedule/lives going on.. even when we all live in the tri-state area.. So, I really appreciated the couple of days we had together. Miss you guys already :]

Cell Phone Break

The last couple of times I've gone out to a restaurant with a group of friends.. we've all put our phones in the middle of the table. We'll usually put the largest phone on the bottom and make a cellphone tower of sorts and say whoever touches their phone has to pay for the meal. Phone missing dialogue then commences: "I just got a text, can I just check, pleaseeee?" "I feel so weird without my phone".. la dee da da.

It's been less than two years since I got my iPhone, but it feels like I've had it forever.. I was pretty late jumping onto the smart phone wagon.. so, I told myself when I got it that I wouldn't become one of those people who are constantly on their phone. Less than two years later... here I am... checking FB, Instagram, fantasy baseball team #1 on ESPN, fantasy baseball team #2 on Yahoo, candy crushing, pinteresting, snapchatting, and texting, much more than I'd like to be doing.

But honestly..... I'd actually like to think that I've done an okay job (compared to who though, right?). I make a big effort to never text when I'm having a meal with somebody one on one (I don't know, it's just a pet peeve of mine.. it never feels good to be the person on the other side of the table. come on, it's a little rude). But.. I have caught myself multiples times texting and playing on my phone when there's a group of people, the company is boring, or I feel uncomfortable. And....... I don't know, I just don't like it I guess. It makes me sad when I see a kid texting while having a meal with their parents.. or worse, when both of them are on their phones.. whole groups of tables just on their phones.. I just feel like you present yourself as unapproachable when your head is constantly buried in your phone.. and is what you're checking really all that important?

So here's to.... spending less time on my phone, not hiding behind it in uncomfortable situations, spending that time approaching someone else or doing something more productive, and just wasting less time obsessing about and checking on other people's lives and spending some more time on my own.

this is a great feeling.. no wonder everyone wants it.

as I write on my blog...!

Wednesday, July 6, 2011

Everyone's everyone else.

It's crazy how caught up with ourselves we are.. and how special we think we are, and how unique. It's hard not to.. all you know is yourself, your actions, your thoughts, etc. We're taught to think we're our own special individual, and I mean we are! but it makes us also think we're the only ones with the problems we have.. that no one else is struggling with the same exact things.. we want to figure things out by our selves because we're too proud and think we can figure it out by ourselves. I read this and all I could think was.. it's a little scary how perfectly this describes myself! (don't worry, i'm not feeling depressed or anything.. i just thought it was interesting)

Tech-boom.

I feel like I'm definitely more anti-technology than most people.. actually maybe you could say technology-delayed. I mean I know there are those people that don't use like anything and are super old-fashioned but.. it takes me awhile. I joined Facebook a lot later than people.. I don't want to upgrade to a smart phone.. I dislike the idea of reading books on an electrical device, etc. but I will give it to the tech-world, it is efficient and amazing. So, after this whole tech-boom and all this high-technology blah blah blah, I feel like the word creep, creepy, creeper has been thrown out a lot more. People who you would have never known about become entertainment through viral household youtube videos.. you can keep in touch with someone you met on a trip while you were in another state, etc. And along with that comes this whole... stalking, creeper shenanigans.
So, I can't think of the other movie.. but I watched Sixteen Candles today.. and I feel like those 80's movies idea of romance is so different. The way that guys approach girls and pursue romance would be considered so creepy in today's standards. They just come up to you and ask you on a date, just show up at your house, (okay who knows if this is really realistic to 80's dating styles, I only have the movies to go off of) and so onnn. I guess I don't really know where I'm going with this.. but it was on my mind.. I definitely still think in my head that I wish everything wasn't so globalized, you only had the means of knowing people around your area, etc. it seems less.. complicated.

here's to new chapters! and working hard!

Stop/Start

Starting tomorrow I'll..

start working hard
start doing my QT's
start taking this more seriously
stop being so unproductive
stop being lazy about washing up
start exercising
stop this, start that

No more starting tomorrow's.. because they simply do not work, for me.
Just do it.
There's something hopeful yet tricky about giving yourself that one night of extra sleep to think you can start changing everything tomorrow. Then sooner than you know it, BAM! YOU'RE FIFTY. Haha actually I don't know.. but you do start to realize you've been spending all your time always just restarting and never really getting anywhere.

Ordinary.

It's amazing yet startling how easy it is to relate to her thoughts and life, especially when you lack God in your life, or perhaps it's startling just how ordinary all our minds are. The only creativity was the beauty with which she was able to express her prose, and look where that got her.

"Should we all confess our sins to one another, we would laugh at one another for our lack of originality."

home weekend!

home sweet home :)

home for the weekend! really felt like coming home all week while i was at school and the brother was nice enough to pick me up after my classes on friday afternoon and we got pho for lunch which was nice :) i came home and decided i wanted to watch a movie... and decided on brokeback mountain b/c we had talked about it in class and it's just one of those movies that's been on my external that i still haven't watched yet. so, i basically fell asleep midway through and ended up napping for 4 hours.... a good start :)
i think i really need a weekend at home! i haven't been home on a friday for so long.

things i plan on doing:
  • lotssss of catching-up on sleep. no alarm letting my body wake up whenever it wants blissful sleep. my bed at home is so comfortable <3
  • getting schoolwork done. it's crunch time now.
  • some leisurely reading.
  • korean food! yumm.
  • shopping maybe tomorrow!
  • hang out with the grams :)
random things about the animals in my home:
  • my beta fish.. is basically my mom's beta fish. she feeds it, she comes in and talks with it when she gives it food and she also named it. his/her name is blue. a good gender-neutral name. im planning on moving blue and his/her fishbowl home into my mom's room tomorrow while she's at work. HAHA
  • i only converse with my dogs in korean, it's really weird. that's just what comes out.
good weekend to you allllll!

a 'good day'

today was... a good day. i've used that phrase a lot before.. but structurally and event wise.. today was actually really good. recap:

-i actually woke up when i planned & actually got myself to get up and take a shower.
-had time to take my time to get ready for class.
-had a hearty breakfast.
-realized the weather was going to be superduper fantastic. automatic 100 points.
-participated in my class.
-actually did the reading for my next class during the 50 minute break i have inbetween (there have been so many times this semester i don't do the reading and plan to do this and end up spending those 50 minutes on like facebook or something) classes
-sold tickets for the asa/ksa formal and got some free chinese food.
-found out my paper i thought was due today is actually not due for another week or so (this may have been the biggest game-changer)
-spent my time in women in the bible effectively.. and by that I mean looking up scholarships.
-had some quality bonding time w/ agnes in the beautiful weather.
-had a nice dinner and then saxby's time with agnes & sophie.
-completed TWO commentaries!
-had an epic wiffleball game where we won in the bottom of the last inning off a grandslam from justin and brian hitting in the winning run. the other team was fun/funny too.
-relaxed and got some late night.
-and now i'm back in my room not feeling tired at all (it'll probably hit me tomorrow when i have to wake up for my 830, but lets not think that far ahead)

so looking back.. it was a .. pretty dang good day.. but i can't also help and look back on this wonderful day of events that are pretty fantastic for a monday and still linger on the emotional/mind (whatever you want to call it) fluctuations that also occurred throughout the day. no, that does not mean i got angry, frustrated, or flipped out on someone, but just there have been so many thoughts that swiver (i don't even know if that's the right word but it feels right) in and around my mind/brain such as....

-why do i care so much about what others think about me?
-do i complain too much?
-do i just think too much about it and people don't even care as much as I think and maybe I'm just self-conscious?
-do i just have low self-esteem? i never thought i did. or maybe this is just a phase.
-man, people (including myself) care so much about how people look.. and it's so easy to just attribute personality with that.
-how much do i actually know? i could just be a fool who's ignorantly going along thinking she has some kind of sense of what's going on in her life.
-why do people try so hard to seem so perfect and with no problems, that seems foolish.. there's no one that's like that and we all know that.. yet we try so hard.
-how much can you really change or do in one day?
-was today actually a good day? did i do any good?
-i feel like i could say the way i acted and my actions and mindset could say that i took some steps.. little steps? micro steps?
-but is that good enough? i can't believe today was a whole day and it's already passed.
-soon the week will be over.. then a month.. will these little steps even make a difference and actually produce a change?
-or am i just going to do something that'll make me take 5 more steps behind & make it feel even more impossible and once again hopeless to even take a little step forward?

so.. was it a good day? i don't know, but these are the events and thoughts that occurred during today... just during one day. tomorrow will again be just one day. it seems so long, but so short, it's crazy.

ps: thanks adele for accompanying me and being the soundtrack for my day.

i.... part 2

  • i am loving john mayer's songs and voice.. but it just does not fit his body and what he looks like, and i find it unsettling.. hindering me from loving his songs as much as i should.
  • i haven't enjoyed a textbook so much before (no sarcasm). thank you social psychology.
  • i hate washing up.. but i love the anticipation right before im about to wash up because i know i'm going to feel so excited afterwards because i'm done washing up.. HAHA.
  • never again will i have such big gaps in my schedule.. it's like setting myself up to miss class.. taking an extra nap here and there.
  • i love st. marys breakfast. it's quiet and peaceful and they always have oatmeal.
  • i love how excited my mom's voice is when i call her.
  • i love talking with my grandma on the phone because she reminds me every time that i should be enjoying studying and school right now because it'll be really different once you have a job and start working. and she always talks about how the dogs are doing.
  • i have been drooling lately when i sleep. gross :|
  • i have these songs on my youtube playlist recently: [still] hold it against me by sam tsui, chris brown's look at me now, john mayer's clarity and no such thing, damien rice's 9 crimes, & regina spektor's laughing with. it's my study mix.
